our history

Faith Lutheran Church began with a very small gathering of families.

In the Fall of 1966, a tiny mission congregation - made up of a just a handful of families - was born in Anchorage. Pastor David Zietlow was called to be Faith's first resident pastor in December, 1967. Nineteen people attended the first church service which was held in a rented church. In 1970 the church, in its current location, was dedicated.

Our church grew.

The congregation grew despite the fact that Anchorage had a very transient population with many church members in the military. In 1992, Pastor James Oldfield answered our call and began serving the congregation of Faith.

In the fall of 2015, due to health concerns, Pastor Oldfield passed the torch on. Pastor Ewings took over and has been faithfully serving our congregation ever since.

We tore down barriers along the way...

To reach out to our Hispanic speaking community, our church called Pastor Stephen Mueller to serve as our Spanish Outreach Pastor. He answered that call in August of 2002 and Iglesia Luterana de fe en Cristo was born. We were now sharing God's Word in multiple languages. The Hispanic congregation continues to grow. In 2012, Pastor Christopher Ewings took over leading the Hispanic congregation.

Continuing down this path, our church saw a need to reach out to our fellow Hmong residents in Anchorage. So, in 2010, Faith Lutheran put out a call to Pastor Pao Moua and opened its doors to the growing number of Hmong Christians, leading to the development of Hmong Lutheran Alaska. They are led by Pastor Moua every Sunday afternoon.

Educating our young has been a focus of our congregation since our early years.

Faith Lutheran School has been a ministry of our congregation for four decades. We currently have a faculty of three full-time teachers: Principal Tom Zarnstorff, Mrs. Cindy Zarnstorff and Ms. Heidi Kruger. At present approximately 60 students are enrolled in grades K-8.

On October 21, 2013, we saw a need to expand our school to serve the growing number of preschoolers in our community and started Faith Lutheran Preschool. Ms. Rachel Wendland served as the first preschool director and was instrumental in developing the program. Our preschool opened with four students and quickly increased enrollment to full capacity. Ms. Melissa Mittelstadt took over as director in July 2015 and has now passed the baton off to Ms. Stephanie Rockwell as she has been called on again.

And we continue to grow.

As our congregation has grown, so has the need for an additional pastor. So, in the summer of 2018, Faith Lutheran put out a call to Pastor Nathan Wagenknecht to help serve our English and Spanish congregations along with Pastor Ewings. He answered our call and began serving our growing church in October 2018.

With the addition of another pastor, our congregation has been able to add more programs for our church and the community. From small group bible studies to summer youth programs to our Making Better Series and Faith on Fire, we are striving to spread God's Word in any way possible. Check us out and see what God has in store for you!
